Shakespeare creates tension through dramatic irony by creating evil witches that offer the main character the crown of Scotland. Before the witches offer great power they curse an innocent woman only because she refused to share her nuts with one of the witches.The witch then curses the husband ( a sailor) and all his crew, they no longer are able to sleep and are always hungry.
The main character, Macbeth trusts the witches prophecies this would make the audience feel tension because Macbeth does not know what the witches are capable of. This means Macbeth is quite naive or just plain selfish. This is how Shakespeare creates tension throughout the whole play because most of the audience know much more than the character.
At the end of the play Macbeth is killed by Macduff.
Even though Macbeth was given prophecies from the witches, no man born naturally from a woman can harm him. Macduff was possibly born differently and that made Macduff the only one possibly able to kill Macbeth. This is interesting because in most stories the main character doesn’t usually die.

You should now – focus on developing two aspects of your essay – Dramatic irony & the change in Macbeth’s character – how does this relate to the genre of tragedy. How does this play upon the audiences emotions and expectations? Why?
